The Osmonds star is due to bring his Las Vegas show Moon River & Me, a tribute to musician Andy Williams, to Llandudno
Las Vegas may be the entertainment capital of the world but Jimmy Osmond is looking forward to a gig in North Wales.
Celebrating 50 years in show business, Jimmy, the youngest sibling of the world renowned Osmonds, will bring his show, Moon River & Me, which pays tribute to the songs of music legend Andy Williams, to Venue Cymru, Llandudno next month.
“I really love Wales and Llandudno in particular, I’ve spent some great times there.
“My family will be in the UK at Christmas time and my daughter is keen to spend the holidays somewhere in Wales.
“I know a lot about my Welsh roots, there are members of my family from Swansea and Merthyr Tydfil and Andy Williams has Welsh roots too. He was proud of them and we would often compare notes,” he said.
Jimmy’s anniversary tour kicks off in Las Vegas this weekend before he brings the show to the UK.
It’s a fitting place to start as Williams played a major role in featuring the Osmond Brothers including three-year-old Jimmy on his television show. The Osmonds also performed on Andy Williams’ live shows in Las Vegas.
“Las Vegas has held so many special moments for me, including my history and friendship with many legendary entertainers. I even had the unique honour of being named the youngest ‘Elvis’ impersonator aged six.
“Producing and performing ‘Moon River & Me’ pays homage to my friend and mentor and is the most wonderful way I can imagine to celebrate my 50th year in show business. The show is not about me – it’s about Andy Williams and his music.
“I perform songs like Music To Watch Girls By, Happy Heart, Speak Softly Love and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You and of course Moon River.”
The Williams’ family have allowed Jimmy to use clips of Andy.
“When I start singing, “You’re just too good to be true”, you’ll see it being performed by Andy on the video walls. And when I do Love Story, Andy sings it with me on the big screen. It brings back great memories for thousands of people,” Jimmy said.
Andy’s Moon River Theatre in Branson, Missouri is part of Jimmy’s mission to preserve the memory of Andy Williams.
“Andy asked me to keep his legacy alive.
“His family weren’t interested in continuing the theatre – it’s a very hard job.
“At first I said no but then I produced a Christmas show there, and it went very well. His family said, ‘If you don’t take it over, we’ll have to sell it.’ So I bought it!
“I put a lot of love into it, and it seems to have paid off,” he said.
But Jimmy will also sing some old Osmond hits in the show at Llandudno.
“I do a section of Osmonds’ material – Love Me For a Reason, Crazy Horses and Let Me In.
“I also do a comedy section. During A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock’n’Roll, I put masks of Donny and Marie on people from the audience, so I can get back at my siblings!”
It’s not the only craft Jimmy’s mastered. Aside from being an accomplished caricaturist and published author he’s won even more British hearts after his recent appearance on Celebrity Masterchef.
“I really loved being on that show and didn’t think I would get as far as I did.
“I went in with just two recipes and was really surprised to get through to the final but loved every minute of it and learned so much.
“Now people expect me to cook for them rather than sing,” he added.
Moon River & Me with Jimmy Osmond is at Venue Cymru, Llandudno on October 25 at 7.30pm. More details online or from the Box Office on 01492 872000.
